L’ouvrage explore les différentes manières dont la loterie a été imaginée dans l’Europe de la première modernité et du long XVIIIᵉ siècle. Il propose une série d’études de cas interconnectées portant sur le Danemark-Norvège, les espaces germanophones, la Grande-Bretagne, les Pays-Bas, la France, l’Italie et l’Espagne, et met en dialogue un vaste ensemble de matériaux : billets et publicités de loterie, pamphlets et périodiques, œuvres d’art visuel, chansons populaires, poésie, prose de fiction et pièces de théâtre, ainsi que des traités politiques, moraux et juridiques.

Ces corpus montrent comment les loteries ont été perçues à la fois comme des invitations au fantasme, au rêve et à la rêverie ; comme des pratiques génératrices de folie, de superstition et de jeu compulsif ; comme des facteurs de misère sociale, de faillite et de suicide ; comme des dispositifs soulevant des questions de risque, de confiance et d’équité ; et comme des phénomènes profondément inscrits dans les transformations politiques et financières qui accompagnent l’émergence de la modernité.

Lottery Fantasies, Follies, and Controversies

The volume explores the ways in which the lottery was imagined in early modern and long eighteenth-century Europe. It presents a series of interconnected case studies from Denmark-Norway, the German-speaking areas, Britain, the Low Countries, France, Italy, and Spain, which bring into dialogue a wide range of materials: lottery tickets and advertisements, pamphlets and periodicals, visual art, popular songs, poetry, prose fiction and plays, political, moral, and judicial treatises. This material suggests how lotteries were perceived as inviting fantasies, dreams, and daydreams; as engendering folly, superstition, and compulsive playing; as leading to social misery, bankruptcy, and suicide; as betraying questions of risk, trust, and fairness; and as being deeply embedded in the political and fi nancial development of an emerging modernity.
